janus_coinSince Roman times, the two-faced god Janus has us looking both forwards and backwards, at this time of year. Looking backwards, I am tempted to say “good riddance” to 2016, but it wasn’t all bad. To give one instance, art history was reinstated as an exam subject in schools, and the world did not implode following the results of certain referendums and elections – and Marble Arch is still standing. When all else fails, our body of cultural works informs us of truths that escape the more cynical media.

Looking forwards, we have the splendid America After the Fall exhibition to look forward to, which includes works by the splendid Edward Hopper, none other. It opens at the Royal Academy on February 25. But it marks just a beginning; watch this space for continuing news of art exhibitions, in 2017.
